< BACK     ...northwestern Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Their sculptor was Mathias Bernard Braun, a highly regarded and foremost sculptor of his day. Braun was famous for his adornment of the masterful statues for the Charles Bridge, built in 1445 by King Charles IV.
       Mr. Braun's son was allowed to "make only one" copy of each magnificent piece. The fate of the other works is ambiguous, at best, after World War II. But some pieces remain at the castle intact.
